Virginia Commonwealth University Founder's Hall Building Restoration
Richmond, VA
Founders Hall is a historic four-story structure built between 1883 and 1885, with at least three later additions. Its envelope is solid brick with interior plaster, and its 255 windows are wood double-hung sash. VCU engaged Raymond to investigate after persistent water and moisture problems raised concerns about mold growth. Our team found windows deteriorated to National Park Service Repair Class II and III, allowing air and water into the mass masonry walls, and roof systems past serviceable life with rainwater management no longer functioning. Recommendations included window restoration, a thermal and vapor envelope below the mansard roof, flat roof replacement, and mortar repointing to reduce wall absorption.
